Mentalization--based treatment (MBT) promotes clients’ ability to interpret the meaning of others’ behavior by considering their underlying mental states and intentions, as well as clients’ capacity to understand the impact of their own behaviors on others. Written by an international team of clinician--researchers who are pioneering the MBT model with children, the authors begin by exploring the significance of mentalization and then devote the core chapters to the process of conducting short-term (9--12 sessions) MBT for children, including problem assessment and case formulation in terms of mentalizing techniques, the therapist’s stance, and treatment termination. The aim of this edited collection is to extend our knowledge of the important phonological concept of sonority to a range of other languages (several of them under-described languages). In previous work, sonority has most often been applied to languages commonly described in the linguistics literature. In this collection we have expanded this to include languages of Africa, Asia, and the Americas, as well as phonological development in lesser reported languages. The challenges to sonority that these studies reveal is discussed in the concluding chapters where alternatives to this concept are explored.

This book presents diverse, original research studies on typical and atypical child language acquisition in monolingual, bilingual and bi-dialectal settings, with a focus on development, assessment and research methodology.
